Skin Care Routine Order: What to Apply First, Morning and Night

You bought a face wash, a cream and a sunscreen. Now the question: which goes on first?

The order matters more than most people think. Apply products in the wrong sequence and some can’t absorb properly, others can pile up on top of each other, and sunscreen can end up diluted by the layers beneath it. This guide covers the correct skin care routine order for morning and night, and why each step comes where it does.

The one rule behind every routine

Apply products from the thinnest texture to the thickest. Water-like and light products go first, so they can sink into the skin. Creams and sunscreens go on top, where they seal in what’s below and protect the skin. Sunscreen is always the last step in the morning.

Morning routine: 4 steps

Step 1: Cleanse

Start with a clean face. Cleansing removes the oil and sweat your skin produced overnight, so everything after it works better.

Choose the cleanser that matches your main concern:

  • Pimples and oily skin: the AcniChic Acne Clear Face Wash is a mild, hydrating cleanser made for acne-prone skin.
  • Dull-looking skin and uneven tone: the GloChic Glowing Face Wash cleanses away oil and dead skin cells, with niacinamide and licorice extract to support a brighter look.

Wet your face, lather a small amount, massage gently for about 30 seconds, rinse well and pat dry. Don’t rub with the towel.

Step 2: Treat

This is where your targeted product goes: the one aimed at your main concern, whether dark spots, uneven tone or dullness. The GloChic Glowing Cream is a brightening formula designed to help improve the look of dark spots and uneven tone.

Use a small, pea-sized amount for the whole face and spread it evenly. Using more doesn’t speed up results.

Step 3: Moisturize (if your skin needs it)

Even oily skin needs some hydration. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, add a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer. Dry skin may need a richer one. If your treatment cream already feels moisturizing enough, you can skip this step in summer.

Step 4: Sunscreen, always last

This is the most important step of the day, and it goes last. Layers underneath can’t protect you from UV, but a good sunscreen on top can.

The UVChic Sunscreen Cream SPF 60 / PA+++ is a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is non-greasy and suits oily skin. Use about a finger-length for the face and neck, apply it 15 minutes before going out, and reapply every 2 to 3 hours if you’re outdoors or sweating.

Night routine: 3 steps

Sunscreen isn’t needed at night, so the routine is shorter.

  1. Cleanse. This matters even more in the evening, because you need to remove sunscreen, sweat, dust and pollution. If you used one cleanser in the morning, use it again or switch to the other one that suits your concern.
  2. Treat. Apply your targeted cream again, such as the GloChic Glowing Cream.
  3. Moisturize. A light layer helps your skin recover overnight.

Cheat sheet

Step Morning Night
1 Cleanser Cleanser
2 Treatment cream Treatment cream
3 Moisturizer (if needed) Moisturizer
4 Sunscreen (none)

An optional extra step: cleansing the body and problem areas

Face care is only part of the picture. If you deal with fungal-prone skin on the body (itchy, flaky or sweaty areas), a medicated cleansing bar such as the Mico Bar Medicated Soap can be used during your regular bath. It isn’t a face-routine step for most people, so leave it out unless you need it. If itching or rashes persist, see a doctor instead of adding products.

Five mistakes that break the order

  1. Putting sunscreen first, then other products on top. It dilutes the protection.
  2. Applying thick creams before light ones. The heavy layer blocks everything beneath it.
  3. Starting every new product on the same day. If your skin reacts, you won’t know which one caused it. Add one product at a time, one week apart.
  4. Skipping the wait. Give each layer about a minute to settle before the next.
  5. Using cleansers with exfoliating acids too often. Some cleansers, including brightening ones, contain ingredients such as glycolic and lactic acid that gently exfoliate. Use them as directed, and never skip sunscreen afterwards.

How long before you see results?

Skin renews itself over roughly four weeks or more, so judge a routine after 4 to 8 weeks, not after a few days. If your skin stings, burns or becomes very red, stop the new product and consult a doctor. Always patch test a new product on a small area first.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put on my face first in the morning?
Cleanser. After cleansing, apply your treatment, then moisturizer if needed, and finish with sunscreen.

Do I apply sunscreen before or after moisturizer?
After. Sunscreen is always the last step of a morning routine.

Can I use two face washes in one routine?
It’s better to use one at a time. If you use two, use one in the morning and the other in the evening, not back to back.

Do I need sunscreen on cloudy days or indoors?
Yes. UV rays pass through clouds and windows, and Pakistan’s UV levels are high for much of the year.

What order should I use cream and moisturizer?
Apply the lighter, targeted treatment first, then the thicker moisturizer on top.

How many steps does a good routine need?
Three or four is enough: cleanser, treatment, moisturizer if needed, and sunscreen in the morning.
